The fourth season of the American psychological thriller television series You was ordered by Netflix on October 13, 2021. You series co-creator Sera Gamble returns as showrunner. Series star Penn Badgley returns as Joe Goldberg and Tati Gabrielle reprises her role as Marienne Bellamy, with Charlotte Ritchie, Tilly Keeper, Amy-Leigh Hickman, Ed Speleers and Lukas Gage joining the main cast. Filming began in March 2022, primarily in London, and concluded in August. The season was split in two parts, with the first part premiering on February 9, 2023, and the second part premiered on March 9, 2023.
The season is primarily set in London,[3] the first time outside the United States, and showrunner Sera Gamble said protagonist Joe Goldberg is \"great when he's in an environment that's not natural to him, that's foreign to him\". Part of the decision to set the story in another country arose from Gamble's decision to explore the world further after watching many other international series on Netflix while quarantining during the COVID-19 pandemic.[4] The story is also briefly set in Paris, the idea being co-creator Greg Berlanti's, and Gamble noted that since it is not a familiar place to Joe, he is like a \"fish out of water\".[5] Penn Badgley, who portrays Joe, said that while the fourth season would retain the tone of the series, \"We're using a different format [...] It's almost like we're shifting the genre slightly\".[6] The first half of the season is structured like a whodunit, while the second half takes inspiration from Fight Club.[7]
In February 2022, Lukas Gage was cast as a series regular for the season.[8] A month later, Charlotte Ritchie was also cast as a regular.[9] Tati Gabrielle was also confirmed to be returning from the third season, though unclear in what capacity.[10] In April 2022, Tilly Keeper, Amy-Leigh Hickman, and Ed Speleers were cast as new series regulars, with Gabrielle confirmed to be returning as a regular, while Niccy Lin, Aidan Cheng, Stephen Hagan, Ben Wiggins, Eve Austin, Ozioma Whenu, Dario Coates, Sean Pertwee, Brad Alexander, Alison Pargeter and Adam James joined the cast in recurring roles for the fourth season.[11] Jenna Ortega had been offered to reprise her role of Ellie Alves from the second season, but declined due to scheduling conflicts with the TV series Wednesday.[12] Victoria Pedretti and Elizabeth Lail made special guest appearances as Love Quinn and Guinevere Beck, respectively, in the second half of the season.[13][14]
Filming began on March 22, 2022, in the United Kingdom,[11][15] and concluded on August 27.[16] According to reports on social media, in April 2022, filming took place at Royal Holloway, University of London.[17] In June, a scene was filmed by River Thames.[18] Badgley made his directorial debut with the ninth episode of the season.[19] The season features fewer intimate sex scenes than previous seasons in accordance with Badgley's wishes, citing his discomfort with such scenes.[20]
The episode ends with the revelation that Joe did not murder Malcolm and also that the murderer was likely among the rich individuals Joe had met the evening before the murder. As a consequence, Joe can no longer duck the investigation; instead, he must identify the murderer and prevent the authorities from exposing his false identity.
Episode 8 of season 4 of Netflix's thriller You, \"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been\" is another clever episode, offering up a big plot twist and changing the game entirely. It's possible that fans will be divided on this reveal and it will change how they feel about the season in general. However, You still manages to shock four seasons in, which is definitely no small feat given the show's reputation for plot twists and dark storytelling.
Episode 8 of season 4 of You has a major reveal that some fans had guessed: yes, Joe is the Eat The Rich Killer. This feels like it's both obvious and also a shock, which is what makes it so smart. The best thriller series like You have big twists but they have to make sense. It does seem logical that Joe has been the one behind the murders, given his gruesome and disturbing history.
You wanted viewers to wonder if Joe really had become a kinder person and if his new life in London could allow him to forget the evil acts he committed in the past. In some ways, it seemed like he had succeeded, as he was chasing the supposed killer Rhys Montrose (Ed Speeler) and maybe really falling in love with Kate Galvin (Charlotte Ritchie). But, no, Joe has been killing people, just like he did in the previous three seasons.
Season 3 of You has great twists, including Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) being just as horrifying as Joe, and some might not like Joe being the Eat The Rich Killer as this changes the events of part one of season 4. However, it could also be argued that it's smart that You decided to do something different this time around, as it's impossible to say that it's telling the same story over and over again.
Season 4 episode 8 has a beautiful structure, with Marienne telling a fairy tale story about a nightingale and a fox who has stalked, hurt, and tortured her. It's a beautiful yet sad and eerie choice. Part one of season 4 of You featured Marienne briefly, as it seemed that Joe had followed her to Paris and then let her go. However, episode 8 rewinds and tells the story from Marienne's perspective, sharing that Joe drugged her and kidnapped her, putting her in the cage that fans had been waiting to see.
This episode serves one main purpose: to show that Joe hasn't changed at all. When he put Marienne in the cage, he said \"I would never hurt you\" and \"This isn't me. I'm not that man.\" He then gave a terrifying grin like one of the scariest horror movie smiles and said, \"I'm not Joe. I'm just keeping you here until he finally comes back to kill you.\" Joe really believed this, as every time he starts over, he believes he can be done with his past.
The episode is emotional and tough to watch at points, as it really delves into Marienne's mental state and how afraid she is that she will never see her daughter Juliette again. This is a smart choice, as You doesn't shy away from the fact that Joe has hurt people in ways that he has never even really thought about. While Joe thinks that he has done the right thing because he hasn't killed Marienne, he doesn't realize the psychological torture and trauma that he has set in motion. Marienne has had a tough life as she fought her terrible ex for custody, and she is haunted by the threat of losing her child, due to her history of substance abuse.
While it was scary to watch Beck in Joe's cage back in season 1, there's something even more devastating about Marienne in this episode. She looks completely broken down and lost, and the episode becomes even sadder when Nadia wants to call the police and Marienne says \"He always gets away with it.\" It's hard to believe that Joe won't kill Marienne the way that he murdered Beck and Love, and that inevitability lends an overall sadness to the tone of the episode.
Episode 8 of season 4 of You proves that one or two earlier episodes could have been omitted entirely and this would have resulted in a stronger season overall. It's more compelling to watch Joe back to his usual tricks, with a love interest in a cage, instead of the boring social lives of Kate's friend group.
Given that season 4 ofYou has been split into two parts, and You has needed to answer some big questions, it also would have been better to end part one with the reveal of Joe as the Eat The Rich Killer. This would have set up the next few episodes perfectly and suggested that the darkness inside of him has never left.
You season 4 part 1 ends with Rhys announcing that he is running for mayor. In his announcement, he mentions the Eat The Rich killer and how the killer is a symptom of people's disgust with the rich. Despite being rich himself, Rhys poses himself as one of the people. Although Rhys might not have intended for the Eat The Rich killer to help his campaign, it is likely he saw an opportunity after his plan to frame Joe failed. This is the reason that he sends Malcolm's severed finger to the London Dispatch. This action proves that Rhys wants the media to be aware of the killer.
Rhys' mayoral campaign is significant, not only because You season 4, part 1 ends with its announcement, but it is brought up in the first episode of the season. Rhys' plans as mayor aren't revealed, but his campaign may prove sinister. Since Rhys is using the Eat The Rich killer to illustrate how the lower class is sick of the rich, he may incite violence towards the upper class. It is also scary that a murderous psychopath may be put in a position of power. Not to mention, his newfound political power may be very bad for Joe.
You season 4, part 1 ends with Kate asking Joe to the pub, but he rejects her to keep her safe. However, Joe has rejected women before for the same reason, with both Love and Marienne. No matter how hard Joe resists, it seems Joe always goes back to his obsession with the foolish hope that things will go differently. Since Kate lives across from him, it is likely they will run into each other quite a bit. Joe might not be able to control himself, or he might be put in a situation where he must save her.
After all, Joe didn't want to get involved with Kate in the first place. Yet, he still slept with her in You season 4, part 1. He obviously cares for Kate and will probably keep an eye on her to keep her safe. Also, it is likely that Kate won't take kindly to being rejected and continue to try to get Joe to admit his true feelings.
With the exception of Marienne, Joe has a habit of killing those he is obsessed with. Although, Joe's low body count this season, along with his mercy for Marienne, may show that he is changing his murderous ways. Additionally, Rhys' texts gave Joe a dose of his own medicine, so he may try harder to be different from him. Therefore, it is unlikely that Joe will kill Kate, but that doesn't mean she is safe. 59ce067264
